Kia Sonet vs Mahindra XUV 3XO: Which of the two should you buy?

The Kia Sonet and the Mahindra XUV 3XO are two of the most popular compact SUVs in the Indian market. The Sonet is priced from ₹7.9 lakh to ₹15.8 la

...

Mahindra XUV 3XO vs Kia Sonet
Mahindra XUV 3XO is essentially an updated version of XUV300 and was launched in order to revisit the compact SUV space to rival the likes of the Kia Sonet.

While the SUV segment in the Indian automobile industry is doing well in terms of volume of sales and availability of products, it is the compact SUV segment that takes the cake with heightened demand and one of the more diverse catalogues of cars available. While the entire auto industry in the country was slowing down into sales decline, the SUV corner took hold of the market by storm and met the already growing demand with a broad range of products from carmakers competing heavily with each other.

With good market competition comes better products, and nothing could be more true for the Indian compact SUV segment. Out of this competition, consumers were provided with an array of affordable options that did not miss out on the fun factor. Two such cars are the Kia Sonet and the Mahindra XUV 3XO, both delivering outstanding sales results in the first half of 2024.

Kia had sold a total of 1,26,137 units, within the first half of 2024 (H1 2024). The Kia Sonet alone accounted for 43 per cent of the total volume sold, making it the biggest contributor from the South Korean carmaker’s lineup. The XUV 3XO was Mahindra’s attempt to shake the dust off the XUV300’s wraps to re-enter the compact SUV market. Within a month, the carmaker had sold 10,000 units of the 3XO, beating rivals such as the Kia Sonet in the first month of sales.

The Kia Sonet and the Mahindra XUV 3XO are both offered from the factory with three engine options. The XUV 3XO makes an approximate 110 bhp of power and 200 Nm of torque from the 1.2-litre petrol engine, while the TGDi unit generates approximately 130 bhp and 230 Nm of torque. There is a diesel mill that is rated at 115 bhp and 300 Nm of torque, and all three engines can be coupled with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed torque converter.

The Sonet, on the other hand, comes fitted with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that can be paired with a five-speed manual transmission and this unit produces 82 hp and 115 Nm of torque. The turbo-petrol unit is one of the more popular, being able to generate 118 bhp of peak power and 172 Nm of maximum torque. This engine is available with either a six-speed iMT or a seven-speed dual clutch-automatic. The third powertrain option for the Sonet is a 1.5-litre diesel mill that is the only one with a six-speed manual option, and it is able to generate 114 bhp and 250 Nm of torque.

Sonet vs XUV 3XO: Safety features

The Sonet and the XUV 3XO have quite a few safety features in common, and both are offered by their respective manufacturers with six airbags, electronic stability control, hill driving aids, and 360-degree cameras. The biggest difference in terms of safety arises in their respective Advanced Driver Assistance Systems – while Kia offers the Sonet with Level-1 ADAS, the one that the XUV 3XO carries is Level-2. Kia had updated the Sonet in 2024 with the ADAS, and with its addition, the SUV received 10 autonomous safety features, such as frontal collision avoidance features with cyclist and pedestrian detection and lane driving assistance.

The cars measure fairly similar when it comes to their dimensions and offer comparable boot space, with the Sonet providing 385 litres over the 3XO's 364 litres.

Sonet vs XUV 3XO: Connectivity and smartphone integration

Both Kia and Mahindra have provided unique software platforms for users to integrate their smartphone with their car. Kia Sonet interior pictured above, Mahindra XUV 3XO interior pictured below.

The Mahindra XUV 3XO's infotainment system is powered by Adrenox Connect, a software platform with a variety of features available both on-board and off-board. 2025 Audi A5 Teaser
The new-generation Audi A5 will replace the A4 in the brand's lineup and will arrive in Sportback and Avant body styles

Audi has dropped the first official teaser for the new-generation A5 ahead of its world premiere scheduled on July 16, 2024. The new Audi A5 will step into the shoes of the current Audi A4 is all set to be discontinued and will arrive in Sportback and Avant body styles. The German automaker has also announced that it will bring the all-electric A6 e-tron to the market later this month, while the next-generation Audi Q5 is also slated for debut towards the end of the year.

2025 Audi A5

The teaser sketch for the Audi A5 shows the rear profile of the Avant (estate) version. This includes the full-width taillights that are likely to incorporate the brand’s OLED technology. The raked rear windscreen and a pronounced spoiler are also evident and give the model a sportier stance over the outgoing A4 Avant.

The Audi A6 e-tron concept with 700 km of range was first unveiled at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show

Notably, the Audi A5 Sportback is the model India is likely to get as a replacement for the A4. The three-box sedan body style of the A4 will be replaced with a sportier notchback styling on the A5 but expect to see a potentially larger car with more space and creature comforts. Notably, the next-gen A5 will spawn hotter models like the S5 Sportback and RS5 Avant.

Confirming the new A5’s arrival, Gernot Döllner, CEO - Audi, said, “The new Audi A5 family will celebrate its world premiere on July 16 and represents the beginning of the next generation of combustion engines, which will be more efficient thanks to partially electric driving."

“Over the coming years, we will expand our range of electric models step by step. At the same time, we will rejuvenate our portfolio of models with combustion engines. This will give us a robust and flexible position as we transition to an all-electric portfolio," he added.

The new Audi A5 is expected to get mild-hybrid tech, alongside plug-in hybrid versions, depending on the market. The A5 PHEV is expected to offer about 100 km of electric-only range when it arrives. That said, an electric alternative won’t be on the cards. Instead, Audi will bring an all-new EV about the same size as the current A4 (A4 e-tron?), which is expected to arrive later in the decade.

The Audi Q5 is the brand's bestselling SUV and the upcoming third generation will arrive with significant upgrades including partially electrified engines

New Audi A6 e-tron, next-gen Q5 SUV

The Audi CEO also revealed details about the upcoming A6 e-tron. He confirmed that this will be the first electric Audi available at launch in Sportback and Avant body styles. Döllner called the design “striking" while adding that the model will offer “outstanding performance, efficiency, and range."

Meanwhile, the third-generation Audi Q5 will see significant upgrades to the brand’s most successful SUV. Audi has confirmed that the new Q5 will get internal combustion engines with partial electrification when it arrives.

The new Audi Q5, A6 e-tron and A5 are expected to make their way to the Indian market with the models likely to start arriving as early as next year onwards. But the automaker will first introduce the all-new Q6 e-tron that made its global debut earlier this year and could be the brand’s first EV to be locally assembled in the country.

Kia EV6 e-SUV recalled in India over damaged charging unit, 1,138 units affected

The voluntary recall affects 1,138 units of the Kia EV6 manufactured between 2022 and 2024 and is part of a larger global recall issued by the company

Kia EV6
The Kia EV6 has been recalled over an issue with the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) that could stop charging the 12-volt auxiliary battery when damaged

Kia India has issued a voluntary recall for the EV6 electric SUV in the country. The recall affects 1,138 units of the EV manufactured between March 3, 2022, and April 14, 2023. Kia said that the recall was prompted due to an error in the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), which may have affected the performance of the 12-volt auxiliary battery on the car.

Kia EV6 Recalled in India

The India recall is part of a global recall issued by the company earlier this year in several markets. The Kia EV6 arrives in India as a Completely Built Unit (CBU). The issue is related to the ICCU, which enables the car’s charging. Any damage to the device will stop charging the 12-volt auxiliary battery, which can then discharge altogether while driving and progressively reduce motive power. This will result in a total loss of driving power.

The Kia EV6 is the brand's flagship luxury EV and arrives in India as a fully built unit

Kia said that it is proactively updating the software of the integrated charging control unit on the affected EV6 models to ensure a seamless ownership experience. The company did not specify if there were issues reported by customers about the auxiliary battery being completely discharged.

Kia India further said that it has informed the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) about the voluntary recall and will reach out to the affected customers directly. Customers can also get in touch with their respective Kia dealerships to schedule an appointment for the software update.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 Recall for faulty ICCU

Hyundai India issued a similar recall for the Ioniq 5 in June this year affecting 1,744 units. The call also raised potential issues with the ICCU and involved vehicles manufactured between July 21, 2022, and April 30, 2024. While the EV6 is a full import, the Ioniq 5 is locally assembled in the country.
