India Wins T20 World Cup Final Live: After Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja has also called time on his T20I career, making the announcement on Sunday. Just like the other two players, Jadeja will continue playing in other formats of the game.

There were emotional scenes after India won the T20 World Cup title on Saturday by defeating South Africa, with captain Rohit Sharma and team talisman Virat Kohli announcing their retirement from T20Is. The match also marked the final time coach Rahul Dravid was at the helm of the Indian cricket team.

Meanwhile, a day later reactions are still pouring in after India pulled off a sensational victory in the final of the T20 World Cup at Barbados. Everyone from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to legends of the game like Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni have reacted to India winning their first world title in 13 years.

The match was almost slipping out the hands of the Indian cricket team at one point with South Africa needing just 30 runs from 30 balls in their chase, thanks to Heinrich Klaasen’s belligerent 52 off 27 balls. However, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya, who shared seven wickets between them, roared back in the death overs to cut down South Africa at 169-8.

India won its second T20 World Cup to cap off a sequence of last few years where India lost the World Test Championship final twice and the 50-over World Cup final at home to Australia.

“Guys understand when the pressure is on what needs to be done,” India captain Rohit Sharma said after India’s win. “Today was a perfect example, (we) stuck together with backs to the wall. We wanted this really bad … very proud of the bunch of boys and the management.”

India Wins T20 World Cup 2024 Live: On streets of India, a night-long party

Cricket fans across India came out onto the streets, waving the national flag and setting off firecrackers to celebrate the national team's seven-run win against South Africa in a gripping final of the Twenty20 World Cup on Saturday, The Associated Press reported on Sunday.

It was India's second T20 World Cup but its first title in 13 years and the frustration had been building. Over the last 12 months, India lost the World Test Championship final and also the 50-over World Cup final at home. Virat Kohli’s first half-century of the tournament in what he later revealed was his last T20 international anchored India to 176-7 after captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat. South Africa appeared to be on course to reach the target but faltered late on and fell just short.

India Wins T20 World Cup 2024 Live: Rohit Sharma praises Rahul Dravid

After they combined to lead India to a T20 World Cup title, outgoing India T20 captain heaped praise on exiting India head coach Rahul Dravid.

"More than any one of us, I think he (Dravid) deserved that trophy. What he has done for Indian cricket for the past 20-25 years, I think this was the only thing that was missing in his cabinet. I am very happy from all of us on behalf of the entire team that we could actually do this for him. You saw how proud he was and how excited he was," Rohit Sharma said at the press conference aftre India's triumph.

"He's done so much for Indian cricket when he played. Over the last three years, he has worked hard with this team. He has had to suppress his instincts on many an occasion because it is not that easy for the boys to match his wavelength. So Rahul bhai suppressed himself. He learnt what the boys wanted. He prioritised that. Rahul bhai did that for the whole team. He tried to understand what the boys wanted, and what is needed to be given to the boys. Because eventually we have to do the job, Rahul bhai can't go and bat.

"For three years he has provided the boys role clarity. The boys who are not with the team, he has stayed in touch with them: keep telling him what is up with the team, when they can come ack, what their role will be when they come back. Rahul is a studious person. He was the first one to take care of this when he came: we have to tell the boys what we want from them," Rohit Sharma added.

India Wins T20 World Cup 2024 Live: Rohit says winning T20 World Cup one of his "greatest achievements"

India cricket captain Rohit Sharma has said that leading the Indian cricket team to the T20 World Cup title is his "greatest achievement". The win saw Rohit celebrate emotionally, falling on the ground a couple of times and then eating grass from the ground in a scene remniscent of Novak Djokovic celebrating his triumph at Wimbledon.

"This has to be the greatest time, I can say that. It's only because how desperately I wanted to win this. So, all the runs, all the runs that I've scored in all these years, I think it does matter, but I'm not big on stats and all of that. I think winning games for India, winning trophies for India, that is what I look forward to all the time. And having this now right beside me probably has to be, I don't know, honestly, I don't know if it's the greatest or what but it is definitely one of the greatest, I can say that," Rohit Sharma said at the post-final press conference on Saturday.

"I wanted this badly. It's very hard to put it in words because that moment, I don't want to say what I was thinking and what was going in my mind, but it was a very emotional moment personally for me. I wish I could capture that moment myself but not really, you can't do that but I will always remember that. Yeah, those are the moments you wait for and then you don't plan these things, it just happens because you're so desperate for certain things in life and I was very desperate for this in my life. So happy that we eventually crossed the line this time."

India Wins T20 World Cup 2024 Live: Why India needed old-fashioned Kohli

Right through this T20 World Cup Virat Kohli has come across as a different batsman. Opening the innings, he has looked to be more aggressive and until the final, had a string of low scores. In the final, as Marco Jansen delivered the ideal length, Kohli picked up three textbook boundaries giving India a flying start.

But the loss of Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, and Suryakumar Yadav would see the whole of India wishing for the Kohli of the old. The one that was called outdated in the format. One where Kohli drops anchor and lets others play the shots around him. And Kohli obliged.

That this came naturally to him meant even as Axar Patel quickly shifted his gears after steadying the innings, Kohli was content enough dealing in singles and twos.

India Wins T20 World Cup 2024 Live: What Bumrah said after being named Player of the Tournament

Jasprit Bumrah had a tournament to remember, collecting 15 wickets at an average of 8.26. The pacer ended the T20 World Cup 2024 with an economy rate of just 4.17, by far and away the best rate of those to bowl a minimum of 20 overs at the tournament.

Fittingly, he was declared as the Player of the Tournament.

"Usually I’m the one who tries to keep my emotions in check and get the job done but today I don’t have many words. I don’t usually cry after a game but the emotions are taking over. We were in trouble but we’re really over the moon to win from that stage. My family is here, we came close last time and we got the job done, there’s no better feeling than to get your team through in a game like this. It just felt good, tried to keep myself in a bubble and tried not to think too far ahead. When the big day comes, you have to do it, throughout the tournament I felt very clear. I always think about one ball and one over at a time, don’t think too far ahead. Emotions can take over, it was taking over but you have to keep it in check but now that the game is over, it can come out and you can scream and shout. (When he was asked to bowl the 16th over) I saw the ball was a bit scuffed up and it would reverse a bit, thought which would be the most difficult shot for the batter and was able to execute it," he said at the presentation ceremony.

The Indian skipper, who has had to relinquish his captaincy role to Pandya at MI, planted a kiss on Pandya’s cheek.

“This title means a lot. Very emotional, we’ve been working very hard and something was not clicking. But today we got what the whole nation wanted. Special for me after my six months, I haven’t spoken a word, things have been unfair, but I knew there’d be a time I could shine. An opportunity like this makes it all the more special,” Pandya reacted after the match.

Pandya has endured a tumultuous few months in the Indian Premier League when he was booed relentlessly after replacing Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Mumbai Indians franchise.

But the guys understand what is to be done when the back is against the wall, we stuck together and the guys, all of us really wanted to win this really bad. I am very proud of this bunch of boys to give us the liberty to play the way we want and execute. And credit needs to go to the management as well. He also applauded players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah.

“What can one say about Rohit? Superb captaincy! To put the 2023 ODI World Cup loss behind and to keep all our players motivated towards the T20 World Cup is commendable. Jasprit Bumrah’s Player of the Tournament award as well as Virat Kohli’s Player of the Match award are both well-deserved. They were just superb when it mattered. A total team effort. Hearty congratulations to all the players, coaches, support staff, and BCCI.”

India Wins T20 World Cup 2024 Live: Sachin Tendulkar applauds Dravid

After India won the T20 World Cup, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar heaped praise on his one-time teammate Rahul Dravid, who ended his stint as coach of the Indian cricket team on a high.

Sachin Tendulkar was part of the 2007 World Cup team which lost to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to crash out in the group stages. That team was led by Dravid. In the face of that stinging ouster from the World Cup, angry Indian cricket fans had attacked wicketkeeper MS Dhoni’s house and there were protests against the team in some cities where effigies of the players were burnt.

“Very happy for my friend Rahul Dravid, who missed out on the 2011 World Cup win but his contribution to this T20 World Cup victory has been immense. I am so so happy for him,” Tendulkar said on X after Team India's win on Saturday at the Kensington Oval. “Along with Rahul, Paras Mhambrey and Vikram Rathour also made their international debuts in 1996. It was wonderful to see Team India excel under the guidance of this class of ’96.”

They have taken their time, come together to ponder on possibilities in a huddle and have emerged from the field sporting smiles. South Africa have been quick to adapt to every innovation the game has seen, started well at the World Cup, and are now ready to walk the last mile too. (READ MORE)
