HANOI, June 22 (Reuters) - U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink on Saturday said the situation in the South China Sea is deeply concerning, and said China's recent actions in the disputed waterway were "deeply destabilising".

Kritenbrink made the comments during a visit to Hanoi, amid rising tension between China and the Philippines in the South China Sea, where Vietnam is also a claimant.

"We think that China's actions, particularly its recent actions, around the Second Thomas Shoal, vis-à-vis the Philippines have been irresponsible, aggressive, dangerous, deeply destabilising," Kritenbrink said at a briefing for selected media in Hanoi, a recording of which was reviewed by Reuters.

"We're going to continue to stand with our Filipino allies," Kritenbrink said, adding that Washington had made it clear, both publicly and privately, to Beijing that the mutual defence treaty obligations it has with the Philippines were "ironclad".

On Friday, Philippine officials said they did not consider invoking the mutual defence treaty with the U.S. after accusing China of aggressively disrupting a resupply mission in the disputed South China Sea earlier this month.

China's foreign ministry disputed the Philippines' account, with a spokesperson saying on Thursday that the necessary measures taken were lawful, professional and beyond reproach.

"We think every country in the region, including China, needs to respect international law and needs to behave responsibly in the maritime domain," Kritenbrink said.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea, a conduit for more than $3 trillion of annual shipborne commerce, including parts claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei.

In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague said China's claims had no legal basis, a decision Beijing has rejected.

Kritenbrink arrived in Hanoi on Friday on the heels of a visit to Vietnam by Russian President Vladimir Putin that was sharply criticised by Washington.

"Only Vietnam can decide how best to safeguard its sovereignty and advance its interests," Kritenbrink said when asked about his view on Vietnam's foreign policy and its hosting of Putin.

Vietnam and the U.S. officially upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, Vietnam's highest tier of its diplomatic ranking, during a visit to Hanoi by President Joe Biden in September last year.

Kritenbrink said upgrade was "historic and momentous", and said he wanted to maintain momentum to make sure that all of the agreements reached are implemented.

"We continue to believe that the U.S.-Vietnam partnership has never been stronger," he said.

SEOUL, June 22 (Reuters) - A nuclear-powered U.S. aircraft carrier, the Theodore Roosevelt, arrived in the South Korean port city of Busan on Saturday to take part in joint military exercises later this month with the host nation and Japan, naval officials said.

The leaders of the three countries agreed at a summit last August to hold annual military training drills as they sought to project unity in the face of China's growing power and nuclear threats from North Korea.

This month's drills, called "Freedom Edge", will involve the three countries' navies and include maritime, anti-submarine warfare exercises and air defence exercises, said U.S. Rear Admiral Christopher Alexander, commander of the Carrier Strike Group Nine.

"The intent is to improve the interoperability between our navies and ensure that we are ready to respond to any crisis or contingency," he told a press conference, saying the Theodore Roosevelt would serve as the command ship for the drills.

Last year, the three counties also staged joint naval missile defence and anti-submarine exercises to improve responses to North Korean threats.
Russian President Vladimir Putin visited North Korea this week for the first time in 24 years and signed a deal with leader Kim Jong Un that included a mutual defence pledge.

It was one of Russia's most significant moves in Asia for years, which Kim described as amounting to an alliance.

The visit comes seven months after a South Korea trip by another U.S. aircraft carrier, the Carl Vinson, in a show of extended deterrence against the North's nuclear and missile programmes.

Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal are all set to get married this month. Ahead of their wedding, an inside picture from the couple's mehendi ceremony has been doing the rounds on social media. The coupe's friend Jafer Ali Munshi shared the picture on his Instagram story. In the snapshot, Sonakshi and Zaheer are seen dressed in their festive best. The couple are seen posing with their friends.

The caption read, "Soooooooooo excited & Sona is now 'officially in the Bandstand Bldg A clan!"

Recently, the actress' father Shatrughan Sinha's close friend Shashi Ranjan shared an update about the wedding. He told ETimes, "She (Sonakshi) is getting married to the man with whom she is in love. Everybody is participating, Shatru ji's brothers are also coming from America for the wedding. The registered marriage will take place at Zaheer Iqbal's house. It is a very happy moment for me and the family."

A day ago, Shatrughan Sinha confirmed his presence at the wedding. In an interview with Zoom, the veteran actor and politician addressed the false reports claiming he would not be present at the ceremony. He said, "Tell me, whose life is it anyway? It's just the life of my only daughter Sonakshi, whom I am very proud of and immensely fond of. She calls me the pillar of her strength. I will be there at the wedding, certainly. Why shouldn't I and why won't I?"

He added, "The very fact that I have still been in Mumbai conveys that I am here not only as her pillar of strength but as her real kavach (armour) as well. Sonakshi and Zaheer have to live life together. They look very nice together."

Addressing the fake reports circulating online, he said, "I would like to caution them with my signature dialogue: Khamosh, it's none of your business. Mind only your business."

Post a comment ICYDK: Sonakshi and Zaheer have been rumoured to be dating since 2020. They shared screen space in the 2022 film Double XL. They also featured in the music video Jodi Blockbuster last year.
